Learn.Genetics and Teach.Genetics

This month's science link is the educational website "Learn.Genetics" (http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/):

Learn Genetics website hosts educational materials on genetics, bioscience and health topics. They are designed in an user-friendly manner for use by students, teachers and any one who is interested in genetics. The popular, fun, educative items on this website include (i) a highly interactive feature that describes CELL SIZE & SCALE so that one can see how cells compare in size to other known molecules; (ii) an animation on how proteins are made from DNA, (iii) an interactive tool to understand how to clone a DNA fragment and (iv) a very effective expalantion of how genetic traits are inheritied from one generation to the next.

The website also links to a sister website "Teach.Genetics", which has a wealth of information, tools, lesson plans to aid instructors in teaching genetics. I have seen my TA use their 'virtual gel electrophoresis' in a lab class to great effect.

Quoting from their "About us" page:

"The Center's educational materials and programs reach a wide audience. Our Learn.Genetics website is one of the most widely-disseminated education sites in the world. In 2007, it received over 7.1 million unique visits from over 180 countries. Each year over 600 educators participate in professional development programs."
